The University Choir is the large choral ensemble of Tennessee State University. The ensemble prides itself on having high musical expectations and performing a wide variety of standard choral literature, while also being open to all students of TSU, regardless of previous choral-singing experience or major. Well over half of the members of the UChoir hold majors other than music. No audition is necessary to participate in this ensemble—just the desire to learn and to appreciate choral music.

The University Choir comes from a long and respected tradition of choral singing among predominantly African-American colleges and universities. Choral singing has been a major part of Tennessee State University for over 50 years. In 1989 the University Choir participated in a competitive choral festival in Cincinnati, Ohio winning first place. They participated in the Chicago Mid-West Choral Festival in 1990 and received a superior rating. In 1996 and 2002 the choir participated in the “Festival of Spirituals” at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, and performed on national television backing Jennifer Hudson at the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors.

University Choir is under the direction of Dr. Susan Kelly. Students can register to sing in UChoir in one of two sections: Monday/Wednesday from 12:45PM-2:10PM or Tuesday/Thursday from 12:45PM-2:10PM. Both sections join together for performances. This ensemble can be taken for one credit or zero credit. For more information, please contact Dr. Susan Kelly at skelly7@tnstate.edu or 615-963-4953.
